A Good Life Is Like
A cup of chai
Dear Readers,
Whether we are philosophers or just average thinkers, we often ponder the burning questions about life. “What is a good life? “How does one live a good life?" My name is Zarin Khan (No, I am not related to Sal Khan from Khan Academy or Genghis Khan) and throughout Professor Sinclair’s Critical Thinking course, I had the opportunity to find the ingredients to the recipe of a good life. I chose the theme of chai, also known as milk tea in the western world.
I come from a vibrant South Asian culture, and chai has been the answer to headaches, stress, and the synonym to love. Although. making chai is simple, and the ingredients are straightforward, a lot goes into the process that makes chai so stimulating.
The first step is to measure the right amount of milk. The measurement does not require a cup, but experience passed down by your ancestors. You should feel it with your heart, and you will get the measurement right. Then you add the masala and sugar. I prefer cardamom and cinnamon. Although cardamom and cinnamon themselves are revolting, however, the bitter taste with the sugar gives chai an indescribable taste. The fascinating part of making chai is waiting for the milk to denature in heat and then adding the tea leaves. At this point, the aroma of comfort will fill the kitchen and awaken your soul. The rampant, vibrant warm auburn, toffee color concoction will make your mouth water. But do not forget the main ingredient. Love. Love makes tea unique, just like in the recipe of life.
Chai is the symbolism of calling a truce, showing love when saying “I love you” is too hard. I grew up in a South Asian family where chai united us in the same living room around 5 P.M. every day. Each ingredient is associated with a part of life whether it is adversity or reciprocity, and the combination makes an ordinary life a good, happy life. Each page includes unique artifacts to show my interpretation of a good life. Each ingredient will answer the questions and help you come up with your recipe for a good life. This ePortfolio might be your cup of tea.
Love,
Zarin Khan
P.S. Sip on a cup of tea as you navigate the thought process of a chai addict.

I interviewed my best friend's mother for the LBST 2301 course's assignment about a good life. She has experienced so much in life and achieved so much more. The way she passed down her lessons on to her children is mesmerizing. The authenticity that comes with living a good life is difficult. It is not always a positive experience but a mixture of adversities. To battle the daily demons, we must remain true to our foundation and strength and know that life gets better. We have so much to experience beyond pain; there are love and adventure to look forward to. Her life story made me realize that there is a foundation, adversity, love, and reality wrapped all-around the ingredients of a good life.
